Columbus, OH personal injury attorney joins Multi-Million Dollar Forum as a recognition for a case victory

Brian G. Miller, a personal injury attorney in Columbus, OH recently announced his acceptance into Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum.

The case at issue, involving Mr. Miller’s client, Lisa M. Jones, was a significant one. Ms. Jones, a mother to a 3-year-old boy, struck a utility pole near Marion, which downed a power line and left her trapped in her SUV with her son inside. While Jones’s life hung in the balance, medical emergency staff arrived quickly to the accident scene but had to wait nearly an hour for an Ohio Edison employee to arrive and clear the power line. Jones argued this delay had irreversible consequences to her health, leaving her with a permanent brain injury.

Ohio Edison and its affiliate company, FirstEnergy Service Co., argued that Jones’s injuries were due to other factors including her own conduct and subpar medical care proved at The Ohio State University trauma department. However, after receiving the evidence and witness testimony, the jury determined that primary fault was with the electric companies. It was concluded that Jones herself was 20 percent responsible for the brain injury while Ohio Edison and FirstEnergy, were 80 percent responsible.

“There were many challenges to what we asserted was right. Ultimately, to connect with the jurors and convince them that our claims were justified and deserving of meaningful compensation was not only gratifying but has changed multiple lives in a positive manner,” said Miller.

In attempting to convince the jury that Jones deserved meaningful compensation for her injuries Miller faced the difficult task of putting significant value on an individual’s nonfinancial losses. He challenged the jury to think about whether Jones’s financial losses, estimated at 13.3 million over the span of her lifetime, had a more or less significant impact on her life than the nonfinancial losses. The jury answered this prompt when it awarded Jones 20 million dollars in noneconomic losses above and beyond the financial ones. The jury also awarded 1 million to benefit Ms. Jones’s son.

This was a result which not only created a positive result for the client, but also had an impact on the legal community as a whole, and garnered the respect of colleagues. For instance, fellow plaintiffs’ attorney Craig Scott, Esq., wrote:
